Slim Shaka

Poet | Storyteller

The disputation of the 21st-century essence & the history behind it are the subject of Slim Shaka’s poetry. The artist considers himself an observer and a critic of beauty and curse; this vantage point, is his responsibility to mankind. The gradual narrowing of African tradition, political injustice, the pressure of modernized living, and cultural conflict that come with it are among the themes he tackles. Historical facts and verified statistics are among the tools that fashion his coherence as he attends to the audience’s emotion and logic.

Born and raised in Nairobi, David Otieno aka Slim Shaka grew up in an environment that listened to reggae music a lot. This was how people in the ghetto found hope and strength. He too wanted to be part of this glorious oasis. Performance poetry unveiled this pathway.

Slim Shaka is the reigning (65th) Poetry Slam Africa Champion. He has also co-written and performed the lead role in History vs His_story2, a poetry production by Evolution Arthub infusing music, contemporary dance, theatre, and beatbox in seeking to unearth untold stories of Africa.
